I painted 🎨 this first enplein then in the studio, at The Rogers Memorial Library Rose Garden in Southampton NY. I took some beautiful photos durring sunrise capturing to golden light on the roses.
I knew I wanted to paint it again to capture the golden ✨️ light.
I choose this composition for it's description of the life stages of a rose. From full bloom to middle-aged to wilted and fadeing.

I start all my paintings with a value study.
Drawing isn't only a study or practice its where I've learned to develop my visual language.
Moonlit Magnolias

I started with a gouache color study to focus on the color palette 🎨 I played with and tweaked the color to create a warm glow. I added some copper & gold metallic pastels. My favorite part was the light peeking out through the leaves.
I really wanted to capture the magic of a Southern Summer Night. Let me know what you think.

This past April all the Magnolia trees in Frisco Tx, were blooming. They were so stunning. I found this one while looking for a spot to pleinair paint a nocturne. The Magnolias were glowing at night. They were huge and bright. I worked to capture the glow. I did some drawings and color studyies to capture the glowing effect.✨️ It was a challenge and took some expermanting.

This is my painting from @danielkeys 1 day workshop. He is an amazing teacher & artist. He is able to help you identify your weaknesses if your brave enough to expose them. Then the hard work begins.
This is my second workshop with him. I took his 2 day workshop in 2024. I highly recommend taking a multi day workshop if you can! It's hard and He will challenging you! It's well worth it. We focused on the block in, squint & compare.. I left the painting as is from the workshop it's unfinished.
Nancy King Mertz Workshop at IAPS 2026 I'm working from a photo 📸 I took of an abandoned home in Bonhan Texas. One point perspective. I loved the way the light was hitting this home. Once lived in & cared for now falling down and empty.

I painted this in the 1990s while living in Sleep Hollow NY. I've always been a weekend painter. 🎨 Today I'm thankful for my sketchbook habbit that started in 1990. I have a collection of sketchbooks some taking years to finish.
This little painted started in a sketchbook and became a framed painting. Gifted to a great friend.
